    Extra USB ports

    Locked

    by steve.parkhouse ·

I have a customer whose old laptop has only one USB port. She wants to use a USB printer with a USB scanner but the scanner draws power thro the USB (no power unit). I have tried using an external 4 port USB 2.0 hub but it complains that the current is too high. Any ideas?

You say that you tried a hub.

Was it a good quality powered hub?

The best way to deal with high current USB devices is to use a good powered hub.

If the scanner needs to be used where AC power is not available, it would be possible to find a car converter that would provide the 5 Volts DC required by the hub.

If it has an empty pcmcia slot you can add ports that way.
