Extremely long time to boot ME

By john.mckean ·
I have Win ME and it seems to take an extremely long time for it to boot up.

Any ideas why?

There are some things to look at:
-Boot up in interactive mode (hold F8 after bios screen) and check to see if any of the boot up's processes take an inordinate amount of time (such as autoexec and config entries). If any are delayed, see if 'rem'ing them out makes a difference.

-Defragment your hard-drive. Scattered files means a longer load time. Norton Speed Disk (Norton Utilities) is a good program to do this. I try to defrag once a fortnight.

-How much memory does the PC contain? I would say 64 Mb would be the recommended minimum for Win ME.

-Two other things that can't hurt but may aid are:
-updating device drivers
-booting into dos and deleting c:\windows\win.swp (make win rebuild swap file)

Good luck,

Steve.
