Failed to open GPO

By Blackcurrant ·
Hi

We have just finished reinstalling Windows 2000 Server/Small Business Server. When trying to set up a new user account for our backup program (Arcserve), I can create the account but when I tried to give advanced rights to the user via: Start/Programs/Administrative Tools/Domain Controller Security Policy I get an error message saying:

"Failed to open the Group Policy Object. You may not have appropriate rights." Details: The network name cannot be found.

I was logged in as the administrator when I tried to do this.

I have been to Microsoft's knowledge base, and have followed the instructions in article 294257 - "Failed to Open the Group Policy Object". In this article it says to use ADSIEdit.msc to identify the restricted policy, and that the restricted policy should have a notepad icon instead of a folder icon. When I navigate to the container using AESIEdit.msc, as described in the article, all objects have a folder icon, no entry with a notepad icon exists.

Before the OS was reinstalled, I had been able to do this without any problems. If anyone can help me with this I would be extremely grateful.

Thanks.

Hi, Try this:

1. Start / Settings / Control Panel.

2. Double-click Network and Dial-up Connections.

3. Press Advanced Settings on the Advanced menu.

4. Select the Adapters and Bindings tab.

5. In the Connections area, select the network adapter with File and Printer Sharing bound to it.

6. Use the arrow buttons on the right hand side to move the adapter to the top of the list.

7. Press OK.

Hi Thanks for answering. The solution to this was to install Win2kServer/SBS without Exchange (which we do not use).
