Failed Windows Update

By Maggot ·
I have updated two machines today (XP Home Edition SP2) both got a failed update for XP KB913446.These machines are in different locations, one at work and the other at home. The other updates installed fine (4 of them). But this update didn't even download.

Clicking on the Icon to get information as to why the update failed did nothing.

Can anyone offer some enlightenment on this matter? I have posted here because I didn't feel like trudging through the Microsoft system to maybe get a reason or cause.

Is this update FUBAR?

Thanks in advance.

For failed updates:
Start?Run?type ?services.msc? (without quotes)?open Automatic Updates properties?Stop the service (keep window open). Navigate to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution?rename this file. Restart Automatic Updates in the above Services window. Retry update.

The updates should now download properly, although I always like to reboot first before trying again.

There seems to be a problem downloading that specific patch using Windows Update. I had the same issue on three different machines.

The update itself works just fine it seems.

You can always check your update log and see what errors you have there.

C:\WINDOWS\WindowsUpdate.log

Interesting development.... I used the link in the window for setting automatic updates, time etc...it worked this time. I did notice that the file download was larger than when it was shown using the Windows Updates in Start Menu. Perhaps it was incomplete when Microsoft put it on the servers?

Just curious, I looked to this solution but I was confused as to which file I was supposed to re-name, The whole folder?

Anyway I got it updated.

Thanks for your replies.

Sorry. I meant folder, not file.
