False 'IE" opening page "about:blank"

By jmonroe ·
Has anyone ever had this? When I open MS Internet Explorer, the page should open to www.msn.com. Since my 5 yr old granddaughter was playing on my computer, I get this about:blank. I have checked for parasites, run Norton AV, and searched the registry for anything related to about:blank. Any ideas or suggestions?

Jean

Internet Explorer - Tools - Internet Options - General Tab, click on the "use default" button instead of the "use blank" one that your granddaughter must have clicked

Try installing and running Ad-aware, I never heard of spyware changing your Home page to blank, but it wouldn't hurt to give it a scan

Also there is a possibility that she created a local Group policy with "blank" as one of the IE settings

I already have tried that. It works for one time and the second time the IE page will open to the about:blank page.

After changing the start page to default, did you click on Apply at the bottom of the Preferences Window?

Also, to assure that changes do take effect, you should close the application using file / close rather than the "X" in the upper right.

I've done all of that and used the "file" menu to close the window.

Try to update your windows / IE to the latest version. Apply all security patches to your PC as instructed in Microsoft Baseline Secuirty Analyzer, which can be downloaded from Microsoft Web Site. Finally you will be able to reset the settings in internet explorer.

Also, I highly recommend you to run ad-aware, pestpatrol and spysweeper that can clean up a lot of suspicious malware in your PC.

Hope it helps.

IT sounds like you have a trojan on your computer. We had a laptop the other day that was doing the same thing. We use Norton as our anti-virus and they did not detect it. This particulare laptop had 3 trojans on it. (big mess). But the one that we originally thought was causing this issue was JS.Donn

Below is a link to the free download of a firewall/antivirus software offer from CA. You can choose not to install the firewall if you like. Just install the antivirus and download the updates.

Then I would suggest installing SpyBot - Search and Destroy.

Then I would suggest installing SpyWare Blaster.

Forgot to mention to run a virus scan after you download the new updates to the anti-virus.

Do you have hijackthis on your computer? when I installed hijackthis on my computer, my IE was also coming up about:blank. I was browsing through the hijack configuration (you can view by opening hijack, clicking on configuration, and click "main") and there was a default setting for my IE start page.... about:blank. changing that stopped mine from coming back. hope this helps
