Fans only

By Robert Przybylowicz ·
I have a PC that the fans only turn on when I power the unit on. Here is what I have done to it so far:

I have cleaned off the Ram and checked to see of it was a bad stick.

I have taken out the ram and powered on the unit to here the beeps at start up working correctly telling me it is not Mobo.

I have done the same for the Video card.
It appears to boot up when I mess with the video card.

I ran malwarebytes found one virus/back door/ program. I do not believe this to be the problem. I have cleared the system power by pressing the power button at the same time that the power was disconnected from the PC.

I have not check PS but I do not suspect it. I have not replaced any parts on it either.

Any help would be great!

their supposed to only turn on when you turn the power on the computer.

I think (correct me if I am wrong) that they meant to say that only the fans turn on when the power button is pressed (no complete boot) with the exception of when they fiddle with the video card.

If the video card is a PCI card and you have an open PCI slot, try moving it to a different slot. Also, if you can find a different video card, try removing the original and installing a new/alternate card. If that is a no-go I would try replacing the power supply and even possibly the CMOS battery just for kicks. My guess, though, if it is not the video card is that the board may be failing.

well they may have meant to say that but they didn't.

all he said was to quote " I have a PC that the fans only turn on when I power the unit on. Here is what I have done to it so far:"

So if the fans only turn on when he powers on the unit, I have to wonder what he thinks the fans are supposed to do...

Does it post?
If it's not posting try reseating the cmos battery. For a lack of a better way to explain it, sometimes I have noticed that the BIOS gets stuck and a reseat of the battery will clear it up.

Naturally I thought the video card and did swap it out with a new one in a different slot only to find that it was not the video card. I began taking all the components out of the PC and re-seat them when I noticed a lot of dust on the heat sink. I don't know if it was cleaning the board or making a connection reconnect after re-seating them all, but I was able to successfully boot the system and return it to my customer.

So thanks for your help on this one but it turns out just a dirty Mobo.

Oh that was a funny one about wondering if I knew what the fans were supposed to do. lmao
They are supposed to spin right? lol
