Would upgrading my CPU from a celeron 733 to a pentium 866 or 1 gig CPU show much of an improvement in speed?

Yes.

Celeron 733MHz runs at FSB 66MHz with 128KB L2 cache.
PIII 866MHz runs a FSB 133MHz with 256KB L2 cache.
PIII 1GHz runs FSB either at 100MHz or 133MHz with 256KB L2 cache.

Upgrading to either P III should improve performance (you will notice the difference).

To maximize your speed and efficiency, make sure to use PC133 RAM.

Just as an extra point here. As you already have a 733 Celeron you can only go to a 1 GIG Coppermine the Intel CPU's above that sped will die immediately if you fit one to the M'Board as they are a different internal connection and Die. So if you step up to a 1 GIG CPU and similar speed RAM of the 133 variety and the right type for your M'Board you will notice a marked improvement in speed.

The only potential problem is the RAM and you will need to read the user manual/M'Board Book to see what type of RAM you can go up to quite a lot of those older Socket 370 M'Boards used Low Density RAM with an upper Mappable Limit generally 512 MEG although some only went to 256 MEG.
