Fatal Error-IP Configuration

By cdridgley ·
My wife has Windows 95 and when we tried to add broadband it failed. Tech support had me run WINIPCFG which generated the Fatal Error-Cannot read IP Configuration. We moved and cannot find the 95 Install cd. What can we do to get the file that is missing? I have Windows 2000 Pro.

2 solutions are available. The easiest solution would be to reinstall the winsock 2 upgrade. Please visit this link to obtain the winsock2 update:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;[LN];Q182108

In most cases however, since a connection is required to download the Winsock 2 upgrade again, removing the Winsock 2 upgrade is the only option. Run ws2bakup.exe in c:\ws2bakup under Safe Mode to remove the Winsock 2 upgrade.

plus check this site on your Win2k box

Sorry here is more complete description and answer of your problem. The link attached will be able to provide you with more details. Again i apologize for multiple responses.
Error Message

When attempting to run winipcfg, the following error message appears: "Fatal Error! Cannot read IP configuration." In addition to this error message, Internet Explorer will show the following error message: "Internet Explorer cannot open the Internet site (address of site). A connection with the server could not be established"

Cause

Winsock 2 has not been properly uninstalled. This usually happens when the Winsock 2 update has been applied, but the updated winsock files were replaced with the original files.

When it asks for the Win 95 CD try using "C:\Windows\Options\Cabs". If not there try "C:\windows\system" Next would be "C:\Windows". Also there's a details button in the list of choices on the right. If you look at that it will show the destination where the files are going to be saved. Use that as the path. If luck prevails the files will allready be on the system.
