IDE Controller Is Disabled in Device Manager If Secondary IDE Channel Is Disabled in the BIOS

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The information in this article applies to:

Microsoft Windows 98Microsoft Windows 98 Second Edition

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

SYMPTOMS
When you are running Windows 98 on a computer with a VIA Technologies integrated device electronics (IDE) controller that uses the Apollo Pro chip set, one or more of the following symptoms may occur if you disable the secondary IDE channel in the computer's Basic Input/Output System (BIOS):

Windows 98 Second Edition:

The IDE controller may be displayed as disabled in Device Manager, with an exclamation point in a yellow circle. Also, the device may show a resource conflict with an interrupt request (IRQ) resource.

You may be unable to enable or disable the IDE controller in Device Manager.Windows 98:
Both IDE channels may appear as enabled in Device Manager (even though the secondary channel has been disabled in the BIOS).

Another device, such as a Universal Serial Bus (USB) controller, may appear as disabled in Device Manager, with a status of Code 12 (This device cannot find any free interrupt request (IRQ) resources to use).

RESOLUTION
Updates for this problem are available for Windows 98 Second Edition only. Microsoft recommends that customers who are experiencing this problem in Windows 98 either use the workaround described in the "Workaround" section of this article or upgrade to Windows 98 Second Edition if possible.
