Fatal Exception Errors

By al ·
I need a definitive procedure as to how to resolve fatal exception errors on client PCs.

I have a user, who informs me that she is (and has been) unable to access pictures downloaded from the web onto her PC.

She receives the following error message: "A fatal exception has occurred in @ 0167:BFF9DFF The current Application will be terminated.." etc etc.

Clearly the error does not identify the problem as it should do and is un-user friendly (typical of MS). No help on their website either as to this particular error (not surprising as it says nothing anyway)

I understand the concept of exception errors. How can I assist my user and fix this irritating problem, so that she may be able to view pictures again.

Try Downloading I.E 6.0 Beta from MSN.com

Why? Can you please qualify your answer with some technical reason - ie 6.0 is a beta release (ie test only and for use with Windows XP)

I fail to see how this will improve performance when the issue is opening pictures downloaded to the PC.

The question was how to deal with fatal exception errors generally as they occur frequently - downloading IE 6 will not fix this memory leakage issue

Well you did'nt say what program you are using to open the pictures with, is it Photoshop,IE, MS paint???? Fatal exception errors occur when a program passes data to the processor and the processor does not know what to do with it, look to the application that is being used when the error occurs. These errors can sometimes be very hard to pin piont, if the problem persists I would back up what ever data she wants to retain and reinstall the OS, alot of people have a problem with this because they say you are not "fixing" the problem, but when a cranky user is breathing down your neck to get thier PC fixed sometimes this is the fastest and easiest way.
Hope this helps.

What operating system? Not sure what program is being used to open the pictures. I would be suspect that there is a conflict between apps running. Check out what is running in the background. Disable them all and try opening the pictures. If you can open with out error, add the programs back in one at a time. Good idea to check system resources as well.

Hope this works, good luck. Please update with additional info.

Check this link on the MS KB page. It may at least help in determining the actual cause of the error.
