FAX Hack

By CMB ·
Is there any danger to being hacked through a networked system that also has a dial-in modem with only fax software answering the phone? What steps could be taken to minimize risk and still allow this configuration to exist?

Well, security issues are very common with routers, modems, network jacks or dial-in remote access.

When it comes to a modem, some modems do not hang up when Data Terminal Ready or DTR, drops. A setting used on modems, DTR is a configurable option that signals to the modem that the terminal is connected and turned on. If you set the DTR to drop on terminal softwrea disconnect byt not on hardware disconnect, you are opening yourself up to another hole.

So go ahead and change the configurations on your modem to disconnect on hardware as well.
