FCC securtity regulations

by 20 + years In reply to FCC securtity regulations

I am currently working at one of the Blue Cross Blue Shield organizations. As one of the nations leading insurers we are very aware of the the Health Insurance Portability and Accountibility Act (HIPAA). Implementations are due 26 months after theGOv't regulations were issued. Rules for transactions and code sets were published in August of 2000. Privacy regulations were provided in December of 2000. Many in the industry feel that congress may grant an extension but I wouldn't wait to take action on this issue. There are substantial civil as well as criminal provision in the act. Non-compliance could be monitored just by having a disgruntled employee or patient turn you in with a valid complaint. I hope this helps. For more info use your favorite search engine and search on HIPAA. You'll get quite a bit of info. For us it's a multi-million dollar issue.
