Fiber - to - Ethernet?

By ibanks ·
The extension which has just been built on the back of my companys building has had a Fiber Optic backbone put in. What will i need to utilise this backbone and is it possible to have an Ethernet Switch which also recieves/transmits along the cable.
Many thanks

Fiber - to - Ethernet?

The quick dirty and cheap solution is an Ethernet - fiber converter. Connect them to fiber and an available Ethernet port on hub/switch at each end.

Linksys has some for 10/100 Ethernet for a low price, and they have worked for me.

Depends. It's certainly possible to run Ethernet over fiber, but there are some issues to consider, such as cable type (multi-mode or single-mode), termination, distance vs. desired transport. etc.

Assuming that what you've got is simply wiring closet to wiring closet fiber that you need to hook into your existing in-building LAN, it's fairly simple. Find a switch that supports fiber connections (I use HP Procurves, and recommend them highly), determine the type of fiber so you can buy theright modules and/or switches, and you're good to go.

Here are a couple of good links that may help explain the subject better than I can:

You will need a device that has a fiber port or an expansion slot to install one. I use 3-Com's SuperStack products and they work quite well.
