Are there any security issues with having File and Print Sharing enabled on Windows 2000 Professional clients?

One issue is that the sircam virus uses file and print sharing as a means of distribution. It will attempt to infect any PCs that have file and print sharing active.

Also, if you use Microsoft's recommendation for a secure or hisecure environment, enabling this will add to the management of desktops, since security groups will need to be maintained on the desktop.

on a standalone pc not really, unless you connect to the internet. If so you have to check that file and printersharing aren't bind to the internetadapter (your modem).
Check the grc.com and do the tests, there is also a description on how to disable file and printersharing on the internet adapter although I think w2k does it by default.

Also when sharing a folder do give specific accounts permission to access the folders instead of using the everyone group. So you can manage who has accessto the folder, you can restrict the amount of simultanious access. Like the previous answer virus could enter via the share but only if that specific account of the infected machine would have access to the share.
And you could do auditing on the share too, so you have a logg who accessed the share (can do auditing on the whole pc too.)

basically secure as much as you can or let the netadministrator install a share on the server.
