      .ini files are text files

As dklippert said, .ini files are text files that contain settings for programs.

The insallable files are .inf or information files. These are also text based files. INF files contain the installation instructions for Windows to install hardware, or programs.

If the install option is missing for .inf files, I recommend that you try re-installing your OS.

Here is the info for INI files (I am doing this from Win2K, but it should be the same for NT):
      Icon comes from C:\WINNT\System32\shell32.dll
There are 2 Actions, open and print
      action—–app used
      open——-C:\WINNT\System32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1
      print——C:\WINNT\System32\NOTEPAD.EXE /p %1

      Now, for INF files:
Icon comes from the same DLL
      3 actions: Install, open, print

      action—–app used
      Install—-C:\WINNT\System32\rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132 %1
      open——-C:\WINNT\System32\NOTEPAD.EXE %1
      print——C:\WINNT\System32\NOTEPAD.EXE /p %1

      hope this helps
