File location

By lora3498 ·
Where is the file that holds information such as passwords and logins to web sites that I have visited?

If you have lost your password(s) to web sites you have visited, you can often request the password be sent to you via email. Most sites have a 'Fogotton Password?' section that you can access.

Does this help?

No, I needed to know where it is located on my hard drive so I can copy it to my new one. But, thanks, anyway.

Its probably saved in your profile in c:\Documents and Settings\<username>. Copying the entire profile (use the File Transfer Wizard) should keep any settings, users, passwords etc.

Well this all depends on which browser your using ..
If you're using IE, then its stored in a system dll. file.. unuable on other systems..

If you're using Mozilla or Firefox (highly recommended) then the password file is in the docuements and settings>userprofilename>application data>mozilla>profiles>default (if you haven't created a new profile) and there you will find a file called something like

This file will contain what you need. If you're moving your profile to a new machine then you want to copy the entire folder to the new system (after you have installed the browser on the new system as a whole..

If your trying to access someones information, then shame on you..tsk tsk..

Good luck,, I think:)

Alternately, you can do a search on *.pwl to pull all the password files.

IE logon/password info is not held in a file. It's held in the registry in encrypted form. The reg location is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\IntelliForms\SPW

You can try exporting the key as a reg file and then importing it into your new pc but I don't know if the encryption system is the same. Try it and see.
