File Ownership Changes

By rlandry ·
I have a shared file on the network whose security properties are changing each time the file is saved. File ownership changes each time a user with modify/change rights saves it. The new owner is the user who last saved a change. Permissions on the file also change when the save is executed. The new permission are inherited from the parent folder. Is this normal behavior? If not, how do I correct it? Other info: This is an NT 4.0 SP6a server. Each file in the folder has diffent permissions.

Sounds about right.

Set the ownership and permissions on the folder, then you don't care who owns the actual file. If you need varying groups of permissions, set up multiple folders with the appropriate sets of permissions. You probably should assign the permissions to GROUPS rather than individual users.

Good luck.

All folders and files have already been set to Administrator and I do use GROUPS to the maximum. To me this behavior is abnormal. I should be able to have different permissions on each file in a folder.

Just wondering what permissions are you giving the users? If you are assigning "Full Control" that maybe the problem. With "Full Control" they are able to take ownership. You might try "Change" or "Read/Write"

Thanks for your comment. None of the users involved have Full Control. That's why I think something is not working properly.

What type of files are they? I recently ran into a similar problem with an Excel spreadsheet. I password protected the sheet and the problem has not re-occurred. With a Word doc, I shared the doc and tracked the changes. This stopped the permissions from constantly changing.

Hope this helps.

Your suggestion has merit and we'll try it, but I think this problem suggests a security bug. Thank.
