File/Print Sharing Problem

By ReJette ·
My 2 networked computers Win2000 and Win98 don't seem to be seeing each other. I have the "sharing" hand under files and printers; but cannot seem to print to other printers and access other files. This option is enabled on both pc's. Please advise what the problem is and how to fix it. Also, I have AOL and I'm trying to access internet connection sharing between the 2 pc's. I've tried downloading trial "sharing" software; but it's not happening. If you have any suggestions, they are welcomed. Thanks!

Internet Sharing with two computers

by najmulmp In reply to File/Print Sharing Proble ...

In regards to your internet sharing with more than one computer and using free software to do it, I have done this before installing a router/switch (recommended) and I had to install 2 nic cards in one computer to act as the gateway to the internet. Software I recommend is WinGate.

You likely can't ping, can you?

The sharing hand only means that that computer is shared itself, not that it can actually see anything. Heck, you can make the network places or neighborhood work and completely unplug the cables. Are you using a crossover or a hub? I would check cabling first and start some basic troubleshooting, but my hunch is that you are not using a crossover or hub, or that you have cabling problems......

Networking Problem

I would think that it is either a cabling problem, or the option to allow others access is not enabled. I would check all these things first, also check NICs are properly installed.

Networking Problem Check

by ReJette In reply to Networking Problem

I've checked the cables and both activity lights are active on my Linksys Router and Broadband Blaster that was provided by AOL. If you have time, I'd reallllly appreciate a simple walk thru to ensure I have configured everythig correctly. Thanks!
