file restoration

By texaspreacher ·
when by computer is booting up it pauses with a total of (3) lost files one after another in the form of this message:
"cannot find a device file that may be needed to run windows or a windows application.
#1) vnetsup.vxd
press any key to continue
#2 vredir.vxd
press any key to continue
#3 dfs.vxd
press any key to continue.

at this point my computer boots to the a point just before i have to enter the password and gives me this one final message box. " unable to load the dynamic link library MSNP32.dll . the system cannot find the file specified".
I am given the option to click OK which i do , I then enter my password, windows loads up . How can I restore these files and clear up these messages?

It sounds like you might have removed networking or a dial up program that somehow got a bit over aggressive in what it took out.

Each of the files mentioned normally reside in the C:\Windows\systems folder. You might want to do a FIND on your system and see if the files are somehow located in a different location. If so copy them into the C:\Windows\system folder. Then reboot your machine and see if that solves the problem.

If they are not on your system, and it sounds like your running Windows 98, I would then suggest running SFC (system file checker) from Start > Run. You can either simply run the full scan which will check all your system files for missing/corrupt and prompt you to replace them from the install CD , or you can elect to extract just the 4 specific files and have them installed. Again, after finishing reboot the system and check if things are ok.

If neither of these two actions solve the problem then repost a comment with the exact message that you are then getting which will probably be somewhat different from what your getting now.

With the files restored you should again be ok.

If you cancelled Dial-Up networking while the file dialog box was open.
Open the Control Panel, click Add/Remove Programs
Click the Windows Set-Up Tab,then click communications
Click Details, then clear the Dial-Up Networking box
Click OK and Close
Reboot the System and return to the Windows Set-Up and replace the check in box and click OK and close.Reboot

This can also happen if you did not properly install or remove a NIC. If you go into network properties and remove all of the components. Restart the PC and add back any components you need that should fix it.
