File Server Migration – Win2k / DC / NAS

by angry_white_male . Updated 21 years, 2 months ago

We’re upgrading our servers.

Our current set up is a Win2K Server which acts as our Domain Controller, Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and our main file server. The server itself is off warranty, about 5 years old, and eating up too much rack space.

The plan is to move all of the files to a NAS – all network shares, user home directories and user profiles. The Domain Controller, AD, DNS and DHCP will be moved to another server.

The first step is to move all of the files to the NAS. Is there a good migration tool or best practices that will preserve permissions and make changes to the Active Directory structure so I’m not making the changes for about 100 employees one at a time?

The DC/AD/DNS/DHCP move is fairly straight forward, however I’m not finding good info out there on how to do the file server end of things. I’d rather do it the easy way than spend the entire weekend messing around with permissions and changing directory paths in everyone’s profile.

Thanks.
