File Server Resource Manager (FSRM) will not start

By eugene.schuman@signetinc. ·
I am unable to install the file server role on a Windows Server 2003 R2.

The installation appears to go fine. I am prompted for both disk 1 and 2
and then the server reboots. While rebooting a service fails to start.
Below is the error message I get.

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event I 7023
Date: 1/15/2007
Time: 2:06:38 PM
User: N/A
Computer: STI-DNS-SRV01
Description:
The File Server Resource Manager service terminated with the following
error:
File Server Resource Manager is not a valid Win32 application.

I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling with no change. The configure
your server log shows the installation as successful.

This server is also configured with the Domain Controller (Active Directory)
Role and the DNS Server Role. Both are working properly.

Any suggestions or help would be appreciated.

Thanks
GS

Should I have?

by eugene.schuman@signetinc. In reply to did you

Thanks for your reply.
This is a brand new installation of windows server 2003 R2. It was installed with default values. With the exception of being made a Domain controller, (which was done at installation) there is nothing special here. What would be the reason for an AD Schema update?

Solved

I have figured out the problem.

I found what appeared to be a corrupted DLL (dfsext.dll). It displayed the correct version info and date but was much larger then it should have been. After replacing the dll with a known good one the service started.

I now think during the first install I may have mistakenly used my x64 disks. When I re-installed, MS must not rewrite the dll if the dates and versions match. I am not positive this happened, but I checked the DLL size from the X64 version and it matched the bad dll.

Thanks for all your assistance

I figured this out

by test In reply to File Server Resource Mana ...

Finally after two days of research and trial and error.

Using an original Microsoft Volume License x86 version of Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2 does not work nor does using MSDN isos of the same release. It seems that Microsoft have included the x64 versions of the DLLs on that disc as both versions are the same size.

The only way i got it to work was to use an old MSDN disc Windows Server 2003 R2 disc which had DLLs that were different sizes to the other disc and that worked fine.

DFSExt.dll = 42KB
SRMSVC.dll = 1554KB
From original x86 MSDN WIndows Server 2003 R2
DFSExt.dll = 62KB
SRMSVC.dll = 3298KB
From original x64 MSDN WIndows Server 2003 R2

DFSExt.dll = 62KB
SRMSVC.dll = 3298KB
From original x86 VL Windows Server 2003 R2 SP2
DFSExt.dll = 62KB
SRMSVC.dll = 3298KB
From original x64 VL WIndows Server 2003 R2
SP2

Thanks MS for wasting two days of my time by including wrong files on a legitamate disc.
