file sharing & pinging

By wtawfik ·
i have 2 pcs connected directly to each other by a network cable the first pc acts as a gateway and the second connects to the internet through it. the problem is that the first pc cant share files with the second pc and the second pc cannot ping the first one although both of them connects perfectly to the internet and multiplayer games have no problems.
thanks a lot for your time.

Well as you haven't said differently I take it that both units are using some form of XP.

The way to proceed here is to run the Network Setup Wizard on the primary Internet access point and allow File & Printer Sharing then run the network setup wizard on the second machine and enable File & Printer Sharing on that as well as making sure that both have the same Workgroup mane.

Once you have done this you can then manually share the folders that you wish to share by right clicking on them and selecting Sharing and then setup as you require.

AS you say both pc's are connected directly by a network cable, i am assuming you are using a crossover cable. IF this is the case i have experienced similar problems with this setup. I would advised using a hub or switch and a few normal straight through network cables. I have never had anything but issues when using crossover cables with XP, only ever seem to get partail connections.

You need to setup a small office network or work group in order to share files. Also make sure your tcp/ip settings are correct.
