File sharing problems btw XP & 9x

By ahill ·
XP isn't by area of expertise yet and I keep getting similiar complaints about XP having issues when trying to share files with a 9x PC (peer-to-peer style). The problems are generally extremely slow file transfers to XP locking-up. All TCP/IP andfile sharing configurations are reportedly set the way the are suppose to be.

Can't seem to locate a solution at MS and was wondering if anyone has come across similiar problems with any solutions?

Since you didn't indicate which version of XP you have, your setup can vary. However under XP there is a network wizard that will allow you to set up XP and make a 3.5" floppy with the necessary info to set up the 9x machine automatically. Just runthe wizard and follow the prompts and towards the end it will ask you if you want to create the floppy and tell you how to use it. Hope this helps.

If I understand you correctly, you are seeing the problems mainly on the XP machines.

Are the XP drives formatted in ntsf?
If so, the XP machines need to convert the files to fat style before they transfer them to the 9X machines. This is likely where your problem is.

That may explain the file transfer speeds and I'll look into it. But the other one still is a bit vexing - Not being able to open files remotely (those sitting on the 9x PC).
