File Sharing with XP Pro & XP Home

By pj200820 ·
I have 3 computers connected through a WORKGROUP based network. When I try to access a shared folder on the XP Pro machine from the XP Home computer I can see the computer in the workgroup but it shows no shared folders.

The 3rd computer in the WORKGROUP (also running Pro) can access these fodlers no problem so I know they are actually being shared.

File & printer sharing is enabled on all 3 computers & I have already tried running the network wizard again but with no joy.

Anybody got any ideas...

Some Thoughts

Assuming that you haven't exceeded the 10 connections limit on Windows desktop OS, let's check some basics.

Can you ping all the systems by the NetBios name? If not, you need to check that the computer browser service is running on all the systems.

If that service is on, try turning off the Windows firewall. If you can suddenly connect to the share, see http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc787076.aspx to properly configure the firewall.
