File transfer with XP wizard over LAN

By gfstrand ·
We just purchased a new computer and want to transfer files/settings form old to new. I set up a password on my new computer, and connected to my network (5 computers). I went to my workgroup, and I can see my new and old computer. The file transfer goes smoothly using the xp disk, and then the old computer that i am transfering FROM throws up a password box, and says "Enter password for your new computer". It wont take the password I set up as administrator on windows xp on the new computer, and boots me out, and says file wizard not complete. no files transferred. I NEED HELP. PLEASE. I need to transfer the data. Am I missing something? Can some one assist please?

Try removing password from new computer until you have the files transferred. Go to user accounts in control panel and follow prompts to temporarily remove password. You may also need to go to folder options on your old computer and check the box that says show hidden files and folders, until the transfer is completed. Hope this helps.

If your new XP computer is called NEWCOMP and the log-in on your existing computer is 'user1' you could, in a login with Administrator rights on NEWCOMP, go to Start / Control Panel / Computer Management / Local Users & Groups. Right click on Users, click New User.

Insert user1, and user1's password, de-select user must change password. Try that.

If it doesn't work try inserting \\NEWCOMP\user1 as the new user's name.

Hope that helps.
