I did locate the Folder and Search Options

by Healer In reply to Open explorer

I did locate the Folder and Search Options from the Windows Explorer and Control before I started this question. However, I can't see the File Type Option. Perhaps this feature no longer exists with Vista. The reason I ask because of the Open With problem I had reported on another thread http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-6230-0.html?forumID=101&threadID=316424&tag=nl.rCOMBINED.

Vista has no option to add or delete file association.

In XP one can add file association without the file actually being around or delete it. I can't find the similar function in Vista. It only allows change only. I know one can use "Open with" to associate file with program when the file is available. In some rare circumstances when the file association is corrupt, it would be nice to be able to do it.

Deault Programs allows no deletion or addition but change only

I don't seem to be able to find anything from your two given web sites http://articles.techrepublic.com.com/5100-10878_11-6172036.html and http://ask-leo.com/where_did_file_associations_go_in_windows_vista.html relating to deleting or adding file association from Default Programs option under Control Panel. It only allows to change. I think changing sometimes doesn't clear corruption if any. However deletion with the computer restart might do it.

a Vista System at the moment but with Windows 7 it has picked up the extensions for everything that I have installed and associated the file types.

You have to remember that Vista is not XP. It is a new Operating System with a lot of changes.

For example when I checked the associations for WinRar it listed a lot of extensions. I then uninstalled WinRar and rechecked. There were no file extensions listed for WinRar.

The reason

by Healer In reply to Open explorer

I like to be able to delete and add the file associations without uninstalling and installing the software is I still have some redundant or incorrect file associations which still have not been cleared.

Some of the programs such as MYOB do not automatically associate their data files to their programs. Certainly in this case, I can use the "Open With" function.

By the way, wouldn't you have Windows 7 installed side by side with Vista instead of replacing it. I have considered installed Windows 7 on the same computer where I have Vista but I hesitate until I get the released version.
