Files appearing in C:\Windows in Win98se

By FlyingGeek ·
I have added a new Western Digital 20GB ATA-100 hard drive to my PC and removed the old one. I reinstalled Windows 98 SE and everything works great. The only thing I've noticed is that every time I boot the PC or Turn it off, a *.tmp file is placed in my C:\Windows root directory. The temp files build up with every boot; so over a months time, there are about 150 in there. They are 0 KB, so I'm not worried about losing space. I just don't want the files. The beginning of the file looks like a memory address, followed by .tmp .

You can add an old DOS command to the Autoexec.bat file that would delete those files every time you boot. This is only fine if there are no other .tmp files in the root of C:\Windows.
DELTREE /Y C:\WINDOWS\*.TMP
Hope this helps!
(The /Y eliminates the need to answer Y or N at boot to delete the files.)

Have you updated your virus files? There are two that I know of that do this. Also check your startup in task bar to see if there are programs or tsrs that are loading. Tem files are left overs from MS programs that let you recover files if the computer shuts down or the first document goes bad.
