    Files deleted from Home Directory

    Locked

    by atholl ·

WinNT 4 Network. Workstations= Win9x, WinME WinXP Pro. Roaming Profiles are used. 1000 users logging on to 300 computers. School Enviroinment.
When users log off from WinXP Pro their files are being deleted from Home Directory.
I have read Q182079 that this can be caused by using Roaming profiles and Home Directory in the same path. Microsoft recommend creating a profile folder within the home directory. This then causes all files and folders to be COPIED to the profile directory. (Effectively doubling up on used space). Is there any other “simple” solution to this problem? With laptops now being supplied with WinXP Pro this is becoming more of a problem.
    Any help will be appreciated!!!!!!

      Hello,

If MS’s solution is keeping the files you want in the location you want and simply doubling the files, you could add a line in the logon script to delete all the files from the folder you don’t want them stored in. It won’t stop the problem nor reduce system load, but it will stop the data doubling up while you search for a more permanent solution.

      Hi,
I use the same enviroment but I don’t have these issue, deleting or doubling files (I assume that we speak about files and folders from profile).
What path you entered in user profile (“user profile path” and “home directory”)?
Maybe you havetwo saved profile for users: one old and other new (current) after these modifications. If this is the situation you can delete the old profiles.

This was a known problem not just in XP, but with 2000 Pro and NT Workstation as well. Strange thing is that MS says the files “may” be deleted. Meaning that it does not happen all the time.

I do not see how the recommended solution will double your disk space. If your home directory is
      \\server\homedirs\userdir
      and your profile path is
      \\server\homedirs\userdir\profiledir
then the profile is stored in in the “profiledir” folder. The old profile items that were formerly stored in the “userdir” folder will no longer be needed, and can be deleted.
