FILES/DIRECTORIES UNDER NTFS

By Galaxis ·
How many files can a directory contain under NTFS? I know it depends on several factors; the cluster size, the number of directories/levels of directories already present, the size allocated to the MFT, etc., and I know NTFS uses 64-bit encoding (so theoretically it can have 16-exabyte files or 16 exabytes. Is there a formula or something that can give a realistic calculation based on these factors or a maximum size the MFT can grow to?

There is no limit except for the total size of all the files in the dir which is 16 EB. If it takes a 10000000 files to get there then the B-Tree structure of the NTFS MFT can handle it. The MFT will also grow as large as it needs to. It is only limited by the amount of disk space avail.

Of course, the greater the number of files, the larger the MFT and thus the longer it will take to search it. My experience is that after 500 files, the delay is not worth it and the amount of work required to be done by the system can cause errors in explorer.

I hope this helps.

"Rejected" sounds so harsh! The answer was good, but it didn't really tell me anything I didn't already know. Our directories routinely house thousands of files with no errors in Explorer. I guess what I'm really looking for is a guideline to determine optimums with regard to maximum MFT size and cluster size when given number of files, average file size, usage stats (wait, did I just answer my own question?)

I see what you want now. I was teaching you to suck eggs a bit. Sorry for that.

I cannot say I have encountered anything like that before. I had a quick search of Technet (keyword MFT) and only came up with article Q174619. You've probably seen it already and it's not much help.

Sorry I cannot help further. Best of luck in your search.
