Files on Windows 95

By ms04422 ·
Referring to the other question I have open, when I am installing the files to make the computer "network-ready", I'm missing a ton of files that are not on the 95 disk. I'm robbing the files I need off of another computer and can't seem to find them on the 95 or 98 disk. What am I doing wrong?

sounds like you're either

a) not copyiung files from the Nic driver diskette. I have a few NICs around here that require the use of two diskettes. I generally load both onto the hard drive. A lot of guesswork when I first had to do it.

or

b) You either not loading the cabs or you're loading the cabs but from two different versions of windows (you have rev A installed and you're loading from OSR2 cabs)

If you're installing drivers for your NIC and Windows 95 is asking for files in the CD, they are in the following folder:

d:\win95

Substitute d: with your CD-ROM drive letter.

First 2 answers are good, but it may also have to do with the version of Win95 you're running. Early versions are missing some network files (e.g. ndis2sup.vxd) which are in USB update or other updates for Windows.

The files you need are in cabinet (.CAB) files in the WIN95 folder on the Windows CD. These files are sometimes copied to the local hard disk for easy access, look under windows\options\cabs. If you need drivers in addition to these (i.e. NIC cards, modems, etc) they should come with the hardware.

Answer 3 does have a possible suggestion, but doesnt go far enough in explaination.

There are at least three different editions of Win95, sub-named sequentially A, B, and C.
If you right-click on "My computer" you will see the Windows 95 versionlisted. (if you dont see anything after the version then it's 'A')

Once installed, you can also reuse the driver files by telling the install wizard to look in C:\WINDOWS and C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM
