Files read-only on Win2k file server

By cberndt ·
After upgrading an existing Win2k Domain user to WinXP OS and WinXP office this user's word files occasionally open up as read-only. If the user closes the file and reopens it usually comes back in editable form (sometimes she must do this more thanonce). This does not happen every time or with every file or always with the same file. Now I have a second user who has been upgraded from Win2k to WinXP and she is having the same sporadic occurrences (we have other users that are running WinXP without a problem). I have pushed the NTFS permissions thru her directory tree, performed all MS patches to the OS and office products. I have verified no other user has opened the file open. I have searched the web for any other none reports but have found none. This user is also local admin on her PC. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Files read-only on Win2k file server

by hhammond In reply to Files read-only on Win2k ...

We had the same problem and after 6 months we finally found something that worked.

First go to MS02-070: Flaw in SMB Signing May Permit Group Policy to Be Modified.
and download the 329170 package.

Then go to Group Policy on the client machine.

Windows Settings\Local Policies\Security Options

DISABLE

Microsoft Network Server: Digitally sign communications (if cllient agrees)

Microsoft Network Server: Digitally sign communications (always)

Microsoft Network Client: Digitally sign communications (if server agrees)

Microsoft Network Client: Digitally sign communications (always)

Hope this works for you.
