Files Unassociated

What's wrong with my PC? My Word & Excel documents just turns into .com or program files files, whenever I open it. What would I do? Do I have to format my hard drive?

I would suspect a virus. Make sure you have the latest anti-virus definitions.

I agree, you've probably got a virus. A new virus, the w32.yaba virus has the characteristics of going through your hard drive and re-naming files with extensions which later lead to trouble.

If you notice this soon enough, and are willing to spend the time, and know all the filenames, you can go in and manually rename the files correctly. Remember, however, that until you employ a utility that will successfully remove the resident virus and innoculate your PC against similar infection, the problem will resurface later.

This could be due to a virus. Therefore, I suggest you upgrade the DAT files of the virus scan software installed in the system. And then scan your computer. For a free online scan, visit the following website:

http://housecall.antivirus.com/

To change the file association, follow these steps:

1. Click Start.
2. Click Search.
3. Click "For Files or Folders."
4. Type *.DOC in the "Search for Files or Folders Named" box.
5. Select "Local Disk (C:) in the "Look in" box.
6. ClickSearch Now.

Every DOC file on the (C:) Drive will be located and displayed.

7. Click the first file in the list one time so that it is highlighted.
8. Hold down the Shift button on your keyboard.
9. Click on the DOC file one time with your right mouse button.
10. Release the Shift button Click Shutdown.
11. Select "Open With?" in the menu.

The "Open With" dialog box will be displayed.

12. Scroll down using the scroll bar on the right hand side of the list.
13. Click one time to highlight "Microsoft Word."
14. Place a checkmark in the checkbox beside: "Always use this program to open these files."
15. Click OK.

Similarly, for Excel search for *.XLS, and from the Open With box, select Microsoft Excel.

Ramro Kayta.
