    Filter Driver and External Drive

    Locked

    by hroeder ·

I’ve been attempting to install a USB external drive on an IBM Netvista X running WinXP. This computer has USB 1.1 running. The drives I’ve attempted all are USB 2.0 with backward compatibility to 1.1.

When connected I’ve gotten the same message from Windows 3 different times for three different products: Hardware Installation: hardware installation cannot be completed because an improper filter driver has been installed.

All of the drives have been recognized by Windows, plug and play starts automatically. But even with a disc of drivers I cannot complete the process. If I restart the computer it just continues to try to reinstall the same hardware.

Is there anything I can do to get this external drive to work? As the Netvista X series has no room for an additional internal drive I must have an external drive.

2 things you can try to do. #1 go to the site on the drives. Then download the newest drivers. #2 buy a USB 2.0 IO card and plug it in. The Hard drives say they are backward compatitible but it does not allways mean it will work so 2.0 might be the best way to go about it if the new drivers dont work.

I have a disc with the newest drivers. They won’t install. If this computer had room for a PCI-USB 2.0 card I’d install it. Unfortunately the Netvista X41, which is IBM’s all in one machine, has no internal room, at all. Since it’s a P4 with a DVD-RAM drive, and an LCD monitor (all one unit) I’m loath to replace it.
Plus, it says “filter driver” is improperly installed. The device driver, itself, is load and Control Panel reports it is operating correctly.

Have you installed Service Pack 1a for XP? XP doesn’t have native USB support and the service pack fixed it.

Uhm. . .where did you get the idea that XP doesn’t support USB?
        Nevertheless, I’ve installed Service Pack 1, 1a, and all updates. . .
