Find embedded links in excel

By drgear ·
I have inherited a large workbook that makes references to another workbook that no longer exists. How can I find the cell that references the other workbook so that I can update the formula without going through every cell in all of the tabs?

Find references to other files in Excel

Try doing a find (ctrl F) for ":\" (without the quotes). When the 'Find and Replace' box pop's up, click on 'Options >>'. Set 'Within' to 'Workbook' and 'Look in' to 'Formulas'. Assuming you don't have ":\" typed in your spreadsheet a lot, this will take you to any cell that containes a reference to another file. This is because the formula starts with "='C...". I'd recommend just searching for though, just incase the drive was not C. You could also use a wildcard and do a search for "='?:\" if you are getting too many hits the other way.
