Finding your discussions -- A question for our uber-community members

Hey, several of you have said that you're having a hard time finding the threads that you're participating. We're trying to better understand this so that we can fine-tune what's displayed in your profile.

Can you help by telling us what you're having a hard time finding and/or what's missing from the current My Stuff | My Discussions?

Thanks for your feedback. We're going to keep tweaking and tuning, with your help.

A couple of things..

by AnsuGisalas In reply to Finding your discussions ...

A list of discussions I've posted to (listed by discussion name, and showing last contributor).
A list of discussions my contacts have posted to (listed by discussion name, and showing last contributor).
**I put these in the suggestions sheet a while ago...**
Also, having a terse, densely packed thread view is necessary... otherwise, trying to find the live end of a large thread is like trying to navigate a mountain through a magnifying glass... really cool would be if we could have both the expanded and the dense view, side-by-side!!! That would be awesome.
Making chain-linked scrolling between two different listings sounds like it might be difficult, but that can wait... just having the "birds-eye" view would help enormously.
If I'm reading an enormous thread, showing all posts expanded, it gets to be quite a lot of work to get to the bottom of it, or back to the top.
On the other hand, showing 100 at a time, the threading is cut between "pages", which is also a royal pain in the backside!

Definitely need the "Last Contrinbutor"

on any page that lists discussions with a "Last Post" time stamp. It's faster to spot new content via the name rather than a time stamp.

Not so much finding discussions I'm participating in,

by CharlieSpencer In reply to Finding your discussions ...

as finding the new content within an existing discussion. Only the newest post is identified as 'Just In'. This makes it hard to locate any other comments added since I last viewed a discussion. There's no equivalent to the old ' *NEW* ' tag flagging all the latest entries; 'Just In' only flags a single one.

*New* - sorely missed.
Especially with those 100+ monsters (notice how it used to be 500+ monsters, that's the magnifying glass).

Working on that -- in fact, an improved version of it

by jasonhiner Moderator In reply to Hear, hear!

We're working on a new implementation of the *New* concept. It's basically a "Read" or "Unread" indicator on each post, and if you're logged in then it would use your cookie to follow you, so that even if you change computers you'll be able to tell which posts in a thread you have already clicked into and which ones you haven't.

We've already got the backend work for this feature finished, so stay tuned. We're pushing to deploy this soon.

How does it track whether a person has lingered long enough at a section of the "expanded" view to know if something's read?
Ah, I get it, it'll be "posted since you last perused this thread", right?
That would help.

Now that sounds outstanding.

I often had differing 'read' and 'unread' colored threads between work and home.

I don't know that I can easily provide specifics, Jason.

But I'll say this, as it pertains to the Forums and navigation.

The previous setup was far more efficient, for many reasons.

It let me know who the last poster was to a discussion when I opened the Forums 'front door'. I don't care who started a Discussion/Question. I do care who the most recent poster to it is.

The current 'View More', that at least in Discussions includes a synopsis is not of near as much value to me as the old 'View More'. I don't remember how many Discussions/Questions were displayed in 'View More', but there were far more than is currently displayed.

When viewing posts from my contacts, I need a far more extensive list than the last three or four discussions/questions they've posted to. I may not remember the exact post/Discussion I'm looking for from a contact. I need to see more than the most recent five...

Any sense of community and personality is missing now when I open to the Forums. This is precisely because so few usernames are listed. It was the sense of community and personality that kept me here. Sure, I'll still read things. But each time I enter through the Forums, which is my preferred entry method, I just get saddened because there's such a loss of 'community feel' with the new interface.

Revamping the new interface with the inclusion of the complete functionality of the old would go a LONG way towards re-personalizing the Forums.

We need numbers back on the posts, too. And an easy way to view the context in which 'Just In' and 'Highest Rated' and 'Editors Choice' have been posted. Though frankly, those three are pretty unnecessary and glob up the opening page of a Discussion.

edit to rearrange...
This new scrolly comment box is too small

I miss the "my forum posts" link that used to be at the top of the discussion. Now, I sometimes have to go into my account, my stuff to find the discussions I posted to or sometimes I can use the community preferences link.

The layout of the new site is very confusing to me. I don't like the "just in" and "top rated" at the top of the page either. Its just not necessary and takes up too much space.

Less is more.
