    Firewall

    Locked

    by alciur22 ·

I want to setup a machine to act as a firewall on an NT Network. We use a static DSL router to get mail into the network to the exchange server. Any suggestions on firewall software and Operating Systems to put on the pC acting as a firewall.

os: for security reasons install w2k or nt.
Software use winproxy. or winroute, or the one of Symantec.

Use Windows NT and don’t use this machine for anything else than routing / firewalling.

For firewall, I would suggest Wingate (the latest version) which is fairly complete.

I’m a big fan of Linux software for a router/firewall machine. In particular, the Linux Router Project (LRP) software has proven to be a stable, secure product and it is compact enough to run from a single floppy. The support from the open-source community that supports this project has been outstanding and generally superior to that of the Microsoft products.

You can find information and disk images at http://lrp.steinkuehler.net.

You say you want to use a PC; consider a
SUN Solaris workstation (older used one)
running Solaris 8 or above and using SunScreen firewall software; that is what I
am using; Sunscreen is fairly easy to use,
Solaris-Sparc solutions are very stable and
so far at least viruses and worms do not infect SUN machines.

      Hi there,

Not too sure what is the budget that you are looking at. You’re having a DSL router and that I would assume you do not have a large network to maintain.

      1. You could opt for Checkpoint FW running
on your PC or the new ISA server. OS
would be Win2K since you have a NT network

      2. If you do not have a box already, you could alwiz try NetScreen FW 5XP which could
be a much cheaper solution than having to
purchase a machine, OS and software FW. Btw,
NetScreen solutionis a ASIC based hardware
      firewall which provides high throughput.

      Hope it helps.
      Thanks.
