disable windows firewall

by JohnHiltz In reply to Firewall

Open up "Start" > "Run"
Type in "services.msc"
Disable the Windows Firewall/ICS service.

Then install your firewall of choice.

No, you usually don't have to turn off the windows firewall. Most firewalls that are XP aware will automatically disable the build in windows firewall and hook to their own, so that the "firewall notifications" will not show up unless their is a problem with the add on firewall.

ADDITIONALLY .. I would not turn of the windows firewall, until you already have downloaded the next one that you're going to try, AND I would physically disconnect from the internet while uninstalling one and installing another (I just changed from ZoneAlarm to Comodo) the reason not to be connected, is for that breif minute or two, you could be attacked and infected without any protection.

The average time is 15 minutes to be infected if sitting open on the net..

what the stupid's don't realize, is that the clock doesn't start when you disconnect.. the clock could have started *any* time, and so every second you are on line and not protected is a second you risk being hit.

Don't play russian roulette with your pc.. get the files, disconnect, uninstall (if you have another software firewall installed) and then install the new one.
