Firewall and router question

By sreejith_c ·

I've a question on the built-in firewall and router capabilities in Windows XP Professional. I'm trying to connect two different networks using the built-in router in Windows XP. Additionally, I've enabled the firewall to prevent any intrusion from the Internet since it is connected to a 24x7 LAN connection. The machine in question has 2 network cards - one connected to the Internet/LAN and the other to my home network. How is it possible or what settings can be made to route traffic between the two networks with the firewall enabled? It works fine without the firewall.

Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

You will have to open ports on the firewall.

Go to the connection that is firewalled select properties go to advanced tab above the cancel button select settings then check of what you want to allow. If you need to allow more selct add then configure accordingly

I did try enabling the ports - that helped me to ping the firewalled machine, but which ports are used for routing purposes? Any specific ports that have to be opened?

Thanks for the answer.
