Firewall w/W2K and 2 NICs

By Gale ·
I have a question that I need some help with. I have a NT4 network running static IP. Our firewall is a W2K box. The one that is in place is working fine but is only the min req's as stated by MS. When we try to ftp out it will reboot. I installed W2k on a new pc. P3 850 128mb ram. We use a wireless connection to the internet. I can reach the internet from this pc but the rest of the network cannot. It is config'd the same. Both NIC's have static IP. Internal IP is 192.xxx with gateway IP of external card. External IP is static and has its own gateway IP. I also tried a different internal NIC. Can anyone help? This doesn't seem like it should be very difficult.

Firewall w/W2K and 2 NICs

The internal nic does not need a gateway, this might not solve the problem of the server rebooting, but you should start with the ip settings correct.
Remember it is never a good idea to have two gateways on one machine, since only one will be used, until it is not available, only then it will use the second one.
On second thought, this might be your rebooting problem, it might get your system overloaded, since it thinks your external card is the gateway, your external card does not know where to send it, so it sends it to the default gateway (your external card)and it will go around in circles, causing a memory/cpu shortage.
Anyways, lose the gateway on the internal nick and test again.

Good luck.
Ron.

Perfect. I had to do some other minor tweaking but it worked great. I didn't even think about that. The minor tweaking had to do mainly with changes in IDS software on the firewall. I plan on re-installing the new box and re-checking it with the changes you mentioned. Your support was greatly appreciated. Thanks
