If you get this message while trying to link an EXCEL file to a WORD file using Mail Merge, try deleting any unused sheets in your EXCEL file.
I usually reduce the number to 10 or 12 sheets (more may be OK, I am not sure), then I close out and exit EXCEL, then try the link process again with this same EXCEL file with the reduced number of sheets. The link has worked every time for me using this method.
