fixing a Compaq

By beautifulfuture ·
I am trying to fix a Compaq pc. The fans power up but that's more or less all, no power led's come on even. I changed the power pack with one that I knew was good but the same symptoms occurred. Any suggestions what I should try next in the fault finding process?

I would remove all the plug-in cards except video if that one is plug-in. Then disconnect power from all drives, and see if you can then get it to power up and perform POST. If it still doesn't power up, you might as well replace the motherboard.

In addition to the above, remove the memory, and boot to see if you get a memory failure.

( you won't get any video, because it won't
pass post tests, but if it is a bad simm/dimm chip, it will also cause the machine to shut down. )

If youhave multiple Dimms, try one, then the other to see if it gets past memory test. If it does, then it's bad memory.

Depending on the age of your compaq, you may have 2 or 4 Simms. Try 1 pair, then the other also. Make sure they are a matched set.

If you can get the machine past the POST and memory check, then one or more of your cards or drives is bad.

Also on the list to try, if you can find the
CMOS re-set jumper, set your CMOS back to
defaults to see if some incompatible settings had been made.
