fixing "uninstall error-abort loading"

By CTOS ·
Recently I have had all kinds of issues with my Win98SE. At startup of the Windows I get a message that I do not seem to get rid of: unable to load UNINSTALL. Aborting loading of UNINSTALL.
Any suggestions on finding the problem? I have checked with MSN and I believe it started with I installed the SP1A from them.

I'v never heard of a service pack for Win98 SE. Post a comment telling exactly what you installed.

My appologies! I am running Win98SE with Office 2000. I tried to install a sevice pack called SR-1a, but did not have the SR-1 installed. The site warns that it will not install if the SR-1 is not there. It did NOT install, but ever since my attempt at installing, I now receive warnings at boot up that: uninstall is unable to load. Aborting uninstall. It is causing the machine to boot into Safe Mode now. I also have a SP-3 disk that MSN mailed to me and have installed it since then.

Try doing a scan/reg restore to a date when you did not have that issue. Win/98..you can access it by doing a fresh boot up and instead of letting windows load try accessing the start up menue and selecting the command promt. You have to go the the orginal command prompt at the start up menue. type in scanreg /restore and it'll give you an option to select a date when you did not have that program on your system.
Hope this helps.

Go to start, then to run and type in these letters....sfc....make sure you have your windows 98 cd handy, it may or may not need it. You are scanning for damaged files. This will tell you if the uninstall file is damaged and it will replace it for you off of the cd. Then I would uninstall the SP 1 if I were you. Hope this helps.
