Flash Drive Not Recognized

By acracker ·
I have a 1GB Kanguru Micro MP3 Pro MP3 Player. When I plug it into my computer, Windows makes the chiming sound that it detected the USB flash drive, but when I go into My Computer, the drive isn't there. I tried assigning it a drive letter via Disk Management, to no avail. I can browse the disk's contents through Disk Management, and read/write to the drive through that application, but I still can't find it in My Computer or Windows Explorer. I did find that if I go into Internet Explorer after assigning the flash drive a letter and type that letter into the address bar and press enter, I can see the drive in Windows Explorer, but not My Computer and as soon as I restart or pull the drive out I can't see it in either My Computer or Windows Explorer anymore. I had this problem a few weeks ago and got it working after I found a fix on a forum that had me delete certain registry keys and restart. But I can't remember the forum or the registry keys. Its not a problem with the flash drive because it works on other computers just fine and it is plugged into a USB 2.0 port on my computer. Thanks for any help anyone can give me!

OS: Windows XP Media Center 2005 SP2

Hi,

Have you checked to see if there is a scrollbar at the bottom of the My Computer window? I used to find thatwhen a network drive was mapped on a client computer that the icon was hidden on the right hand side of the window.

Alternatively, do you have VMWare installed on your machine?

Also is the removable storage service running on your machine?

Regards,

Hello, thanks for the reply,

Yes, I've checked but there is no scrollbar at the bottom of the My Computer window, the flash drive just doesn't show. I did have VMWare installed until a few days ago, and since then I've reformatted my computer. This fixed the problem, but I still don't know why VMWare would affect the USB thumbdrive. I'm just steering clear of VMWare for now, but if you or anyone could tell me why VMWare messed up my thumbdrive I would greatly appreciate it. What is the removable storage service?
Thanks again,

A.

Hi,

I've found that if you have network drives mapped, then the usb flash drive may try to be assigned a drive letter that is the same as a mapped drive.
Check in windows explorer if there are mapped drives and pick an unassigned drive letter and assign this ton the flash drive in disk management.

Jump drive was not recongnized

by valentrd In reply to

Exactly as Ozi mentioned, the drive letter was assigned to a network drive, change the letter in the disk manager and that fixed my issues.

Thanks Ozi for the info

Flash Drive Not Recognized

by ashily24dee In reply to Flash Drive Not Recognize ...

Hi,

The flash drive might not be recognized by the system due to outdated device drivers. So uninstall the device drivers and reinstall latest version of it might help you to fix the error. You can also try uninstalling the USB Root Hub devices in the Device Manager. When you reboot Windows, they will automatically be reinstalled. Sometimes doing this can fix the error.

Hope this information helps you.
