Flash won't flash ~ PC nods off XPmysteries

By jcrose ·
Plugging any of a variety of flash/SD usb2 drives never brings anticipated addition to Explorer, and WinXP refuses to acknowledge, open, copy, or operate. To use the memoty, I must reboot and plug the drive(s)/device(s) while booting.
Am able to use my flash SD memory and drives at home on my Win2K, but the XP on my desk at work will not work with any on hotplug.

PC began putting self to sleep several weeks ago, and a four man IT team tells me they can't figure it out. Finally, I invoked a screensaver to launch after only two minutes of idle, and it stopped the hibernation from taking place.

The machine had worked fine for several months when this began taking pkace. My first thought was viral/worm. but the experts tell me there is nothing untoward on the machine or network.

Dont find discussion of either problem; are they single unit peculiarities, or XP normalities?

I know a few people with flash drives and xp pro has no problems with them

and they don't have a problem with hibernation.

for the flash problem, check the usb device settings, including subsystem, to make sure xp hasn't had the entire hotplug system turned off.

check the power save section of display properties to see if it has been set to hibernate to quickly.

also, does your keyboard have a sleep button on it?
if yes, you might be hitting it accidentally.
