Flashing the BIOS is to upgrade the ROM,which helps with hardware and software problems and to allow system to recognize hard drives large than 8 gig
this can be done by first checking the Post start up screen and see what manufacturer and Bios version you have on your machine,it will show as Award 1.0 for example
Download the BIOS upgrade from the manufacturers web site
Format a bootable floppy disk under windows use format a:/s,put the update files on floppy
Reboot the system with the floppy in drive a:
the flash update loads and prompts you through commands
Let system boot into the BIOS and reset all settings.

Flashing the Bios should only be done if it will fix a problem you are currently having with your computer, or if you want to use some extra functionality that may have been added to the BIOS update. Flashing the BIOS can be very tricky and if doneimproperly will cause your whole system unusable until you buy a new BIOS chip.
