Floppy Disk not able to be read

By ms7212 ·
I have a Win98 computer with disk drive problems. 3.5" floppy shows in my computer, but gives error of "a not accessible, the system cannot read from the specified device. Checked BIOS, Cables (3 different ones), power, even tried another floppy drive. No go! Drivers show as fine, system properties look good. Upon start up if disk is in, it recognizes it and gioves the non-system disk message. What's up? Thanks!

Make sure the disk you are using is formated.

It is weird, but at times the floppy will stick to make it seems as though the floppy is being used,go to device manager and highlight the floppy and then click properties, click the settings tab and make they are set to default.

Try this. Remove the floppy drive and controler from the device manager and restart. Windows should reinstall these and this may solve your problem.

This happened to me and when I tried this it worked without a hitch.

Good luck!

if bios is set to a 3.5 inch floppy and its set to 1.44 megs and you have the data cable on correctly (the light is not constantly on) you might try more than one floppy and you might even try making a bootable floppy and if your machine boots to dos from the disk its a windows based problem in which case I would go into the device manager (in safe mode) and check for duplicates in device manager (like more than one floppy drive) remove all instances of duplicates and I would also remove the generic floppy drive and then also remove the floppy disk controller and reboot windows into normal mode.

Click start\find files or folders.
Find hsflop.pdr.
Delete the file is it is found.
Once deleted or not found do the following:
1)Click start\run.
2)In the open box type 'sfc' and click ok.
3)System file checker comes up, choose
extract.
4)Type 'hsflop.pdr' in the box and click
start.
5)Restore from= <CD drive letter>win98 (or from the HDD if the .cab files are there).
6)Save file in= c:\windows\system\iosubsys.
7)Click ok. Restart the system.

Good luck!
