Floppy Diskette

By nampilaj ·
I have a problem, I just bought a new Acer computer, Pentium III, Windows 2000 professional. When I try to open my old floppy, it will say, " cannot read from the disk, disk may not be formated." But if I try to open in other Win 98 or Win 95, it opens. What could be wrong?

It could be that the floppy heads are not aligned on the floppy with the floppy drive, this will happen with floppies that are used a lot
You can try to copy the old data to a new floppy, open my computer,right-click on floppy, with disk inserted on win 98 and then choose the copy command from the list

soulrider is probably right, but I have seen around 30 instances where floppy will give same error message in Windows 2000. The fix was to reboot the computer, then it would read the floppy. If that didn't work, the only other option is to replacethe floppy drive. Go with soulriders suggestion, and if that doesn't work, try rebooting. If not, try other floppy disks, and you may need to replace drive.
have fun,

Rebooting the computer sometimes helps, but it will still happen with other floppies.

Can you open any floppy, or just this one? If it is a new computer I doubt it is an alignment problem with that computer but with the computer it was formated on. Is there data on it that you need? Copy it to the drive on the other computer and reformat the floppy on the win 2000 comp then put the file back on the floppy from the win 98 comp and see if it now works on both comps. One other fix for floppy problems, believe it or not, is to reinstall the operating system! That probability was highlighted in an article sometime ago right here on this website!

Here are a couple of solutions that have cured this problem for me:

1. Go to Device manager and delete the floppy drive controller. When the system reboots it will detect the drive and reinstall a new controller.

2. Go into your BIOS and make sure that the floppy drive is not swapped.

3. Run a commercial diagnostic utility. I have cured this problem in the past by running Norton Utilities. Running the PC diagnostics cured the problem!

Hope this helps

som disks r 1.44 others r 3.5 e.g. two sided my pc does this also pls make sure that the disk is formatted its just becuase your inserted a high capacity disk the 1.44 if you get a normal one side floppy it will work for shore if you get a 3.5 floppy it can read it via 1.44 so if you get a 3.5 fdd then it can read two sided disks but i reacon that you sould on by one sided disks and they will work for sure cya
