Floppy drive error

By yvonne ·
I have a floppy disk drive that is giving me the following error message: "Disk is not formatted. Do you wish to format it now?" The disk has data on it and can be read by any other machine. The machine has Windows 98 operating system, so I know it's not a MacIntosh issue.

Floppy drive error

Some floppy drives are a little alignment sensitive. Try this: format a floppy on your system and then from another computer, copy the files from the floppy to the Hard disk drive and then from the HDD to the newly formatted floppy. You should be able to access this floppy from your system. Hope this helps

I recommend that you replace the floppy disk drive on the computer that will not read the disk (since other drives will). Floppy drives are very inexpensive these days, and working with a going-bad drive means that you may be ruining the floppiesyou place inside that drive. Sometimes the read/write heads get mis-aligned -- while you can fix that or have it fixed, the $10-15 cost of a new drive makes that the best alternative.
