Floppy Drive Failure (40)

By toltec58 ·
Hi,

I upgraded a PC with a new motherboard, RAM, CPU and case. Used the old floppy, hard drive
and CD. On boot get message..
Floppy Drive Failure (40)
The light stays on on floppy drive (no, there is no disk in drive)
Everything else works fine.
I tried a new drive, new cables and get the same message. Any ideas?

The light staying on indicates to me that it's cabled wrong. The cable is either on backwards or you're using the wrong cable in the chain. Play around and see what happens.

Check the data cable. It it probably on backwords on either the motherboard or the drive.

Check the following:
1. That the cable is not connected backwards (the color line must be to 1-st pin)
2. That you have not bent down some of the pins on the mainboard or on the floppy connector

It is quite likely to be your cable on the floppy drive. You will need to turn the cable over so that the Red Pin is connecting on the oppisite side to what it is currently. If you can Identify the Red Cable on the Power In this will help you to identify where the Red Cable should go on the Ribbon Cable, the Red wire on the ribbon cable will be directly next to the Red power wire on most floppy drives, although this is not always true.Your mainboard and floppy should identify Pin 1- the Pin on the Floppy input that should have the red wire connected to it. it can be identified by a Number 1 next to the appropaute Pin or a solid White Arrow pointing to the first pin. You don't have to see PIN 1 to know where it goes. If you can Identify Pin40 ect, you know that is the wrong end. GOOD LUCK MATE. just keep swapping the cable and truning it on, if the light stays hard on it is still wrong.

If cable and drive is not the problem ( as you had tried a new set), the problem lies on the motherboard. Check the connections on the motherboard, pins, etc.
