Floppy drive not working

By ltfaiivae ·
After reinstalling Win98 SE my floppy drive is unable to read any of my disks. What happened and how do I get it fixed?

First check Device manager to see if the floppy disk controller is listed,if not try using the operating system disk to reload the floppy disk controller
Boot computer and hit button to open CMOS control panel and see if the floppy is listed in system configuration
Use Add New Hardware to load floppy disk controller

With some older machines, adding an extra block device such as a hard drive or a CD-ROM can overtax the power supply. This condition will allow your machine to initialize the floppy drive without error, but can also leave your machine with not quiteenough power to read a floppy disk.

I've seen this happen twice in my experience and the fix is to simply remove the device you just installed or upgrade your power supply.

I hope that this helps you out.

go into start/settings/controlpanel/system and find on device manager. Make sure that the floppy drive doesn't have an X on the icon. If so or if not there then click refresh and use the add new hardware to re-add it. Or delete it if it is there andreboot to auto-detect it.

Also are you sure the that the floppy disk you tried to use isn't bad?

After all the above, shoot some compressed air into the drive to **** away any dust. I use this technique all the time sucessfully.
